The series between India and England began on 1 July 2026. It was a five-match series that was played on the iconic grounds of England. After the 0-2 loss to Ireland, Indian supporters were positive about the upcoming event. The expectation was that the team would learn from their previous mistakes as world-class teams often do, the exact opposite was observed.
The series which started with a match being abandoned due to rain, resulted in a chaotic ending for India. Despite winning all the tosses, the Indian team failed to capitalize. To be precise, there weren’t any moments where we felt any comeback from team India, whether it was bowling or batting first. There are many factors behind this chaotic loss, so blaming one thing would not be valid.
Let’s talk about the areas where we observed the team lacking. It all started with the approach with which Team India came to the ground. It was immature to be precise.
In conditions where the bounce and boundary size favor ground shots year-round, aggressive stroke play was forced resulting in poor shot selection. Adapting to conditions is one of the most important aspects of professional cricketers, but we observed something opposite in this contest between India and England.
We also saw that India’s bowling line-up was unable to utilize the bowling-friendly conditions, it’s not certain whether it was the pressure or lack of preparation and hence we saw in the fifth match between India vs England where England made a mammoth total score of 257 including a century by Jos Buttler who didn’t have any century since 2021, while Harry Brook remained unbeaten on 95 playing a selfless innings for England.
Adding to that, this also reflects the importance of Bumrah in the white-ball format for India and in this specific series, India deeply felt his absence. Not only did Bumrah bowl well in the final match of the T20 World Cup 2024, but created pressure on other teams. This was just one of his many brilliant performances. Over the years, he has served Indian cricket with great consistency. India might not have any bowler like Bumrah in the coming years!
The management is also to be criticized for the selection. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who wasn’t given any chance against Ireland made his T20 debut in the contest of India vs England.
Despite playing a crucial role in winning the T20 World Cup for India in 2026, Sanju Samson was left out of the playing XI after failing to perform in the second match.
Gautam Gambhir (head coach of India) said that they were “unable to adapt to the conditions but was that the same for the test series against NZ, SA, and the recent two-match T20 series against Ireland? There are a lot of questions to be asked. Whether or not we will see a new head coach of India? Will India be able to bounce back in the T20 series against Zimbabwe, or are we looking at another defeat for Gautam Gambhir and management?
Although T20 is a format of quick action when early wickets are falling, stability factors like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill could have been the X-factor for Team India.
Let’s talk about the brilliance of the highest run scorer, Harry Brook (the captain of team England), who scored 229 runs with a strike rate of 214.02 in four innings, not only was he consistent but also in sublime touch. We saw that when Phil Salt was struggling to connect the ball and certainly got out, Brook didn’t let the momentum slip away, delivering consistent performances across almost all the matches.
While bowling, Sam Curran (the all-rounder) did the job magnificently, taking 7 wickets with an average of 16.86, bowling variations, and his most famous slow ball, which deceived the batters most of the time.
Before playing the T20 series with England, India played a two-match T20 series with Ireland, and that was their first match after winning the T20 World Cup of 2026. We have seen in history that after winning any tournament, teams failed to maintain consistency because of overconfidence and other factors. There was something similar that I observed with the approach the Indian team took to the ground.
In conclusion, I will say that the results could have been better if the Indian team had prepared well enough, the lack of consistent bowling, poor shot selection, lack of strike rotation (even when it was possible), lack of capability to deal under pressure, which resulted in dropping catches, no shot was played on merit, no motivation on the field after a couple of defeats. Last but not least, the Indian management, which was unable to decide the targets for this tour, key players like Sanju Samson were not given enough chances.
